Overview

FSME-IMMUN Junior (also known as TicoVac Junior) is a pediatric vaccine developed for the active immunization of children and adolescents aged 1 to 15 years against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). It is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine based on the European Neudörfl strain of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). The vaccine is manufactured by Pfizer, which acquired the product from Baxter. The formulation consists of a 0.25 mL suspension for intramuscular injection, containing formaldehyde-inactivated virus purified via sucrose gradient, adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant, and stabilized with human serum albumin. It works by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the TBEV envelope (E) protein. The primary vaccination schedule typically involves three doses, with subsequent boosters required every 3 to 5 years to maintain long-term protection. The vaccine is thiomersal-free and has been available in its current formulation since 2001.
