Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccine is a prophylactic biologic used to prevent tick-borne encephalitis, a viral infection of the central nervous system caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). The vaccine typically contains inactivated (killed) TBEV as the active ingredient, which stimulates the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the viral envelope protein. Commercially available versions include FSME-IMMUN (marketed by Pfizer, formerly Baxter) and Encepur (marketed by Bavarian Nordic, formerly GSK/Novartis). The vaccine is indicated for individuals at risk of exposure in endemic regions of Europe and Asia. Standard vaccination regimens involve a three-dose primary series followed by periodic boosters, with specific protocols often adjusted for individuals aged 50 and older to account for reduced immunogenicity.
