Overview

Tigecycline + heparin is an antimicrobial lock solution (ALS) combination investigated for the prevention and treatment of central venous catheter (CVC) infections, particularly in intensive care unit (ICU) settings. Tigecycline is a broad-spectrum glycylcycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, providing activity against multi-drug resistant organisms such as MRSA and VRE. Heparin is an anticoagulant that activates antithrombin III to prevent the formation of fibrin clots within the catheter lumen, thereby maintaining catheter patency and reducing the risk of biofilm formation. This specific formulation, containing 5 mg/ml of tigecycline and 500 IU/ml of heparin, was evaluated in clinical trials conducted by Tanta University as a strategy to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI).
