Overview

Tinidazole + metronidazole is a combination of two nitroimidazole-class antimicrobial agents, both of which are small molecule antibiotics and antiprotozoals. Both drugs act primarily by disrupting the DNA synthesis of susceptible organisms, leading to cell death. They are effective against obligate anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoan parasites such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia intestinalis. Metronidazole is widely used for pelvic, abdominal, soft-tissue, gum and tooth infections as well as abscesses in the lungs or brain; it is also a preferred agent for bacterial vaginosis and several protozoal infections. Tinidazole has similar indications but is mainly used for protozoal infections (trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis) and bacterial vaginosis[1][3][5]. Both drugs share a similar mechanism of action—disruption of microbial DNA synthesis—but tinidazole may be better tolerated in some cases[8]. The combination may be considered when broader or synergistic coverage against anaerobes or protozoa is desired.
