TIRV-BioNTech SE-COVID-19-Influenza refers to a combination vaccine candidate consisting of a trivalent influenza mRNA vaccine (tIRV) and a bivalent COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2). Developed by BioNTech in collaboration with Pfizer, this candidate utilizes nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) technology encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs). The COVID-19 component is a bivalent vaccine encoding the spike protein of the ancestral SARS-CoV-2 strain and the Omicron BA.4/BA.5 variants. The trivalent influenza component (tIRV) is designed to encode hemagglutinin (HA) proteins from three influenza strains selected for the relevant season. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and is intended to provide simultaneous protection against both COVID-19 and seasonal influenza, potentially simplifying immunization schedules.
