Titanium dioxide + fluoride is a combination frequently utilized in dental care formulations, such as toothpastes, topical gels, and dental varnishes. The fluoride component (most commonly found as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, or sodium monofluorophosphate) serves as the primary therapeutic agent for the prevention of dental caries. It acts by promoting the remineralization of tooth enamel, facilitating the conversion of hydroxyapatite into acid-resistant fluorapatite, and by inhibiting the bacterial enzyme enolase, which disrupts the glycolytic metabolism of plaque-forming bacteria. Titanium dioxide is primarily included as a physical agent; it serves as a white pigment and opacifier to provide the desired aesthetic appearance of the dental product and can also act as a physical whitening agent by temporarily adhering to the enamel surface to reflect visible light. This combination is ubiquitous in the global consumer healthcare market and is typically regulated under over-the-counter (OTC) monographs for anticavity drug products.
