Overview

TOBI Podhaler is an inhaled dry powder formulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin, specifically developed for the management of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* airway colonization in patients with cystic fibrosis. Developed by Novartis and currently marketed by Viatris, the product utilizes PulmoSphere technology to create light, porous particles delivered via a portable, breath-actuated dry powder inhaler (the Podhaler). This delivery system was designed to improve patient convenience and adherence by significantly reducing administration time compared to traditional nebulized tobramycin inhalation solutions (TIS), as it requires no power source, refrigeration, or complex maintenance. Tobramycin exerts its antibacterial effect by irreversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death.
