Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tobracort is an ophthalmic fixed-dose combination drug containing the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin and the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is developed by União Química and Azidus Brasil for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where a bacterial infection or a risk of bacterial ocular infection exists, such as acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Tobramycin provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Dexamethasone acts as a potent anti-inflammatory agent by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, which leads to the suppression of various inflammatory pathways and the reduction of signs and symptoms like edema and redness.
