This medical treatment regimen was utilized as a comparative intervention in a clinical trial conducted by the Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana for the management of early recurrent pterygium. The regimen consists of a fixed-dose combination of the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin (0.3%) and the corticosteroid dexamethasone (0.1%), commercially known as Trazidex, administered three times daily. This is supplemented with 0.5% carboxymethylcellulose lubricating eye drops (Refresh-Tears). Tobramycin provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Dexamethasone serves as a potent anti-inflammatory agent by acting as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, thereby reducing the inflammatory response and hyperemia associated with pterygium recurrence. Carboxymethylcellulose acts as a mucomimetic ocular lubricant to stabilize the tear film and alleviate symptoms of ocular irritation.
