Tobramycin + piperacillin is a combination of two antibiotics used together for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria[1]. Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum ureidopenicillin (β-lactam) antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death[5][6]. The combination is often used in hospital settings for severe lower respiratory tract infections, including nosocomial pneumonia, where synergy between the two drugs can improve efficacy against resistant pathogens[3][8]. This regimen may be selected empirically or when multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are suspected.
