Overview

This combination therapy involves the use of tocilizumab, a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody, alongside standard-of-care (SOC) chemotherapy for the treatment of metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) and estrogen-receptor (ER)-low breast cancer. Tocilizumab acts as an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist, blocking the pro-inflammatory signaling pathway that contributes to tumor growth, metastasis, and chemoresistance. The chemotherapy component, which may include agents like carboplatin, provides direct cytotoxic effects by damaging DNA or inhibiting cell division. This specific combination is being evaluated in a Phase II clinical trial led by Dr. Kathy Miller at Indiana University to determine if adding IL-6 inhibition to standard chemotherapy improves outcomes, particularly in Black and non-Black patient populations.
