Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tom's Botanically Bright Peppermint is a fluoride-free and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)-free toothpaste developed by Tom's of Maine, a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT04514458) to determine its efficacy in reducing the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the oral cavity of infected individuals. The toothpaste utilizes a combination of botanical ingredients and silicas for cleaning, rather than traditional antimicrobial agents like stannous fluoride. The study aimed to assess whether the mechanical action of brushing, combined with the product's specific formulation, could mitigate viral transmission by lowering the concentration of the virus in saliva. It served as a comparator to stannous fluoride-containing products like Colgate Total.
