Overview
Topical corticosteroids + salicylic acid is a fixed-dose combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of psoriasis and other dry, scaly skin conditions. The combination typically includes a potent topical corticosteroid (such as betamethasone dipropionate or diflucortolone) and the keratolytic agent salicylic acid. Topical corticosteroids act by suppressing inflammation, immune responses, and cell proliferation in the skin through glucocorticoid receptor agonism. Salicylic acid works by breaking down keratin in the outer layer of skin (stratum corneum), promoting desquamation and enhancing penetration of the steroid component. This synergistic effect leads to improved efficacy compared to monotherapy with either agent alone[1][2][4][5]. The main indications are plaque psoriasis and other hyperkeratotic dermatoses.
