Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of topical saline (sterile sodium chloride solution) and levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Topical saline is commonly used for wound irrigation and cleansing due to its isotonic properties, which help maintain tissue hydration and promote healing. Levofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. The combination may be used in clinical settings such as wound care or post-surgical prophylaxis to both cleanse the area (saline) and prevent or treat infection (levofloxacin). This approach has been studied in conditions like mild diabetic foot infections where topical saline plus systemic or local levofloxacin was compared with other regimens[5]. The primary mechanism of action comes from levofloxacin's antibacterial activity; the saline serves as an adjunct for mechanical cleansing.
