Overview
Topiramate + n-acetylcysteine is an investigational combination of two small molecule drugs. Topiramate is an anticonvulsant primarily used for epilepsy and migraine prevention, acting mainly by modulating voltage-gated sodium channels and enhancing GABAergic activity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a mucolytic agent and antioxidant that replenishes intracellular glutathione, with established use in acetaminophen overdose and as a supplement for various neuropsychiatric conditions. The combination has been studied in pilot clinical trials for alcohol use disorder but did not show significant benefit over placebo when combined[1]. Both agents have distinct mechanisms—topiramate as a neuromodulator/anticonvulsant, NAC as an antioxidant/glutamatergic modulator.
