Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sumatriptan (brand name: **Tosymra**) is a small molecule **serotonin (5-HT1B/1D) receptor agonist** (a member of the triptan class) developed as a rapid-acting, single-dose **nasal spray** formulation for the **acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults**. Tosymra is formulated with the absorption enhancer Intravail to provide systemic drug levels comparable to subcutaneous injection, resulting in rapid onset of action. It is not used to prevent migraines, nor is it indicated for cluster, hemiplegic, or basilar migraines. The main mechanism involves cranial blood vessel constriction and inhibition of pro-inflammatory neuropeptide release through selective activation of 5-HT1B/1D receptors on intracranial blood vessels and trigeminal sensory nerves.
