Overview

The Pfizer Bivalent vaccine, commercially known as Comirnaty Bivalent, is an mRNA-based vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech to prevent COVID-19. This formulation is bivalent, meaning it contains two messenger RNA (mRNA) components: one (tozinameran) encoding the spike protein of the original (ancestral) SARS-CoV-2 strain, and another (famtozinameran) encoding the spike protein of the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver the mRNA into host cells, where it is translated into spike proteins that trigger a robust adaptive immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and activation of T-cells. It was primarily authorized and used as a booster dose to enhance protection against emerging variants of concern.
