Overview

BNT162b2 bivalent (WT/OMI BA.1) is a nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccine developed by BioNTech and Pfizer to provide protection against COVID-19. It is a bivalent formulation containing 15 micrograms of mRNA encoding the spike protein of the original SARS-CoV-2 (Wuhan-Hu-1) and 15 micrograms of mRNA encoding the spike protein of the Omicron BA.1 variant. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver the mRNA into host cells, where it is translated into spike proteins that trigger an immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and activation of T cells. This bivalent version was developed as a booster to address waning immunity and the emergence of the Omicron variant.
