Trastuzumab + NK cell immunotherapy is a combination treatment regimen being evaluated by Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou for the treatment of HER2-positive recurrent breast cancer. The therapy utilizes autologous natural killer (NK) cells, which are harvested from the patient's peripheral blood and expanded ex vivo into billions of 'Highly Active Natural Killer' (HANK) cells using specific cytokines. These activated NK cells are then reinfused into the patient in combination with trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 protein overexpressed in certain breast cancers. The mechanism of action involves the synergistic effect of trastuzumab-mediated inhibition of HER2 signaling and the NK cells' ability to execute antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and direct cytotoxic lysis of cancer cells. This investigational approach is currently in Phase 1/2 clinical testing to assess safety and efficacy in patients who have failed prior therapies.
