Overview

**trehalose + arginine + phosphatidylserine** is an experimental combination drug formulation currently studied for its ability to promote autophagy and reduce protein aggregation, particularly in the context of atherosclerosis and potentially neurodegenerative diseases. In recent research, specialized carriers known as Tr-Arg-PS nanomotors have been constructed using trehalose conjugates with arginine and nanoparticles functionalized with phosphatidylserine. This combination enables targeted delivery to macrophages in atherosclerotic plaques, leveraging arginine for nitric oxide (NO) production to propel nanoparticles and phosphatidylserine to enhance cellular uptake via “eat me” signals. The combination has been shown to stimulate autophagy (confirmed by a lower p62 protein in foam cells), reduce lipid deposition, and decrease aortic lesion area in animal models. Trehalose supports protein structural integrity and limits aggregation; arginine enhances NO production, which aids vessel dilatation and immune cell targeting; phosphatidylserine promotes cell signaling, anti-inflammation, and neuroprotection. This combination is being explored for its synergy in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, primarily through enhanced autophagy and reduction of cellular stress markers[7][1][3][8].
