Overview

treprostinil + ethanol refers to the combined use of the prostacyclin analog treprostinil and ethanol, primarily in the management of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Treprostinil is a synthetic analog of prostacyclin (PGI2) that promotes vasodilation of the pulmonary and systemic arterial vascular beds and inhibits platelet aggregation by activating the prostacyclin (IP) receptor, as well as the EP2, DP1, and EP4 receptors. In patients receiving continuous intravenous treprostinil via central venous catheters, ethanol (typically as a 70% solution) is utilized as a catheter lock therapy (ELT) to prevent or treat catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI), which are a significant complication of long-term parenteral therapy. Additionally, ethanol may be used as a solvent or stabilizer in specific delivery systems, such as the Lenus pump, to maintain drug stability and prevent catheter occlusion.
