Overview

triamcinolone + lidocaine is a combination therapy consisting of the synthetic corticosteroid triamcinolone acetonide and the local anesthetic lidocaine. It is being investigated by Northwestern University in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT03127137) for the management of cervical radiculitis and cervical radicular pain. The treatment is administered via cervical interlaminar epidural steroid injection (CESI). Triamcinolone acts as a long-acting anti-inflammatory agent by activating glucocorticoid receptors, which reduces nerve root edema and irritation. Lidocaine provides immediate local anesthesia by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which can offer rapid pain relief and diagnostic information regarding the source of the radicular symptoms. The specific study at Northwestern University evaluates whether the inclusion of lidocaine as a diluent for the steroid injection causes transient objective upper extremity motor weakness compared to using saline as a diluent.
