Overview

Triamcinolone acetonide + 5-ALA is a combination drug intervention being investigated for the treatment of refractory skin diseases. It combines triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic fluorinated corticosteroid that acts as an agonist at intracellular glucocorticoid receptors to suppress inflammation and immune responses, with 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a prodrug and porphyrin precursor used in photodynamic therapy. 5-ALA is metabolized to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in target tissues, which acts as a photosensitizer. The combination is delivered via a novel piezoelectric-driven microneedle device assisted by ultrasound, which aims to provide more even drug distribution and improved effectiveness compared to traditional injections. This approach is being developed by Xiangya Hospital of Central South University.
