Overview

Tricarbonyl(1,10-phenanthroline)rhenium(1+) is a small molecule rhenium(I) coordination complex featuring a 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and three carbonyl groups bound to a central rhenium ion. It belongs to the class of phenanthrolines and is studied primarily as an experimental compound with notable photophysical properties and promising anticancer activity in preclinical models. Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes have demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines—including prostate adenocarcinoma—with selectivity over normal cells. Mechanistically these complexes can localize in mitochondria or nuclei and induce cell death via pathways such as paraptosis or mitochondrial dysfunction rather than classical apoptosis; some derivatives also intercalate DNA or inhibit histone deacetylases[3][5][6]. The compound’s photophysical characteristics make it of interest for theranostic applications (combining therapy and diagnostics). No approved medical uses are reported.
