Overview

Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) is an injectable seasonal flu vaccine containing purified and inactivated hemagglutinin (HA) antigens from three different influenza virus strains—two influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B lineage. The HA protein is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry into host cells. By inducing an immune response against these HA antigens, TIV provides protection against the included strains of seasonal flu. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the production of anti-HA IgG antibodies that neutralize the virus by blocking its ability to bind to host cell receptors[1][2][7]. Historically, TIV was widely used for annual flu prevention but has been largely replaced by quadrivalent vaccines (QIVs), which include a second B strain for broader coverage[6][7]. Multiple manufacturers have produced licensed versions of TIV globally.
