Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) refers to a seasonal vaccine formulation used in clinical research at Stanford University to study immune senescence. As a licensed biological product, it contains inactivated (killed) virus particles from three different influenza strains: typically two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage. The vaccine works by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin and neuraminidase proteins, thereby providing protection against seasonal flu. In the context of Stanford's longitudinal studies (2007–2017), this vaccine was used as a standardized stimulus to compare the magnitude and quality of immune responses across different age groups, helping to characterize the decline of the immune system in the elderly.
