Overview

trivalent mRNA hemagglutinin vaccine 1 + trivalent mRNA neuraminidase vaccine (often identified by the development code **mRNA-1012**) is an investigational combination mRNA vaccine developed by **Moderna** for the prevention of seasonal influenza. The vaccine candidate consists of two distinct mRNA components: a trivalent hemagglutinin (HA) vaccine (derived from or identical to **mRNA-1010**) and a trivalent neuraminidase (NA) vaccine (**mRNA-1011**). By targeting both the HA protein, which mediates viral entry, and the NA protein, which facilitates viral release and spread, the combination aims to elicit a broader and more potent immune response than traditional HA-only vaccines. The trivalent formulation typically targets three seasonal influenza strains—A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and B/Victoria—aligning with recent public health recommendations to exclude the B/Yamagata lineage. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology for the delivery of mRNA sequences into host cells, where they are translated into viral antigens to stimulate neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses.
