Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Truvada + leuprolide is a combination of the fixed-dose antiretroviral Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) and the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprolide acetate. This combination is being studied by Johns Hopkins University in the 'PrEP-GAHT Interactions in TGW' Phase 1 clinical trial. The study aims to evaluate the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions between HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) in transgender women. Truvada acts as a nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor to prevent HIV infection, while leuprolide is used for testosterone suppression. The research focuses on optimizing PrEP dosing in the context of exogenous estrogen and testosterone suppression to ensure effective HIV prevention in this population.
