Overview

Tryptophan-naphthoquinone (3c) is a synthetic small molecule derivative consisting of a 1,4-naphthoquinone moiety coupled with the amino acid tryptophan. Developed as a potential antineoplastic agent, it is synthesized using microwave-assisted methods to improve yield and reaction time. The compound's primary mechanism of action involves redox cycling of the quinone group, leading to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity. In preclinical in vitro studies, 3c has shown significant antiproliferative activity against various cervical cancer cell lines, including HPV-positive (SiHa, CaLo) and HPV-negative (C33-A) types, while exhibiting lower toxicity toward non-tumorigenic immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT).
