Overview

TS-172 + itraconazole refers to the co-administration of TS-172, an orally administered small molecule drug under development by Taisho Pharmaceutical for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia, and itraconazole, a well-established antifungal agent that is also a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) enzymes. TS-172 is currently in phase III clinical trials for hyperphosphatemia in Japan. Its precise mechanism of action remains undefined but it is classified as a therapy for hyperphosphatemia and considered a new molecular entity. Itraconazole is used in this context primarily to study potential drug-drug interactions due to its CYP3A inhibitory properties; it can affect the pharmacokinetics and metabolism of co-administered drugs like TS-172[1][2][3][4][5]. The combination has been studied in healthy volunteers to assess safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic interactions.
