Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes + interleukin-2 is a combination cellular immunotherapy for cancer. The treatment involves isolating tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) from a patient's own tumor tissue, expanding and activating them in the laboratory using high concentrations of interleukin-2 (IL-2), and then infusing these activated cells back into the patient. After infusion, additional doses of IL-2 are administered to further stimulate and expand the transferred TILs within the body. This approach leverages the natural ability of TILs to recognize and attack cancer cells, while IL-2 acts as an immune-stimulating cytokine that promotes their proliferation and activity. The combination has shown efficacy particularly in advanced melanoma patients who have failed other therapies[4][5][6]. The process typically includes preparative chemotherapy to deplete existing immune cells before infusion.
