Overview

Tyrosine + metformin is a combination of the non-essential amino acid L-tyrosine and the biguanide antihyperglycemic agent metformin. Metformin is a first-line pharmaceutical treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus that works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. L-tyrosine is a precursor to catecholamine neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. While not currently available as an FDA-approved fixed-dose combination product, the two substances have been studied together in clinical and preclinical research to evaluate potential synergistic effects on metabolic parameters, glycemic control, and the influence of tyrosine on metformin's pharmacokinetics. Metformin is typically administered as metformin hydrochloride, while tyrosine is often used as a dietary supplement or medical food.
