UC-MSC + DMARDs is an investigational combination therapy being developed by Alliancells Bioscience Corporation Limited for the treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis. The therapy involves the intravenous administration of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) in conjunction with conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). UC-MSCs are multipotent cells characterized by their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical data from a Phase I/II trial indicates that this combination significantly improves disease activity scores (DAS28) by increasing the population of peripheral blood regulatory T cells (Tregs) and decreasing levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). This approach aims to address the underlying immune dysregulation and synovial inflammation characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis, potentially offering a synergistic effect over DMARD treatment alone.
