Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a biological product collected from the placenta and umbilical cord after childbirth, serving as a rich source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). It is primarily utilized in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to reconstitute the blood and immune systems in patients with hematologic malignancies, bone marrow failure syndromes, and certain genetic disorders. In recent clinical investigations, UCB infusions are being explored as a supportive therapy to accelerate hematologic recovery following intensive chemotherapy (myelosuppression) and as a treatment for refractory pediatric leukemias such as juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML). The therapeutic effect is driven by the engraftment of donor cells and the paracrine signaling of cytokines that promote endogenous bone marrow regeneration.
