Overview

Umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (UCBMC) is a cell therapy being developed by the China Spinal Cord Injury Network for the treatment of chronic ischemic stroke. The treatment involves the surgical transplantation of a suspension containing 10 to 40 million viable mononuclear cells derived from umbilical cord blood into the brain tissue adjacent to the infarcted area. These cells are hypothesized to facilitate recovery by secreting neurotrophic factors, promoting angiogenesis, and modulating the local immune environment to support neural plasticity and repair in the chronic phase of stroke. The mononuclear cell fraction of umbilical cord blood contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and various progenitor cells, which collectively contribute to tissue regeneration and functional recovery.
