Overview

Umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (UCBMC) are a heterogeneous population of immune and progenitor cells isolated from human umbilical cord blood. This cell therapy product contains B-cells, T-cells, mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and is a rich source of CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells. UCBMC has been studied for its ability to modulate the immune response and promote tissue regeneration through the release of trophic factors such as VEGF, nerve growth factor, colony stimulating factor-1, thrombopoietin, and IL11. In preclinical models (e.g., aged rats), intravenous administration of UCBMC improved the microenvironment in the brain by reducing inflammation and shifting cytokine expression from Th1 to Th2 responses. These effects are thought to rejuvenate endogenous neural stem/progenitor cell populations rather than directly replacing lost or damaged neurons. The minimally invasive nature of peripheral administration raises potential for clinical application in neurodegenerative diseases or age-related cognitive decline[4].
