Umbilical cord blood stem cells (UCB-SCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy developed by Richard Burt, MD, for the treatment of severe vascular conditions, including critical limb ischemia (CLI), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), and thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease). The therapy involves the intramuscular injection of a concentrated suspension of total nucleated cells derived from umbilical cord blood into the ischemic limb. These cells are thought to promote therapeutic angiogenesis and vasculogenesis by secreting a variety of pro-angiogenic growth factors and cytokines (paracrine signaling), which stimulate the formation of new blood vessels and improve perfusion in tissues where surgical or endovascular revascularization is not feasible.
