Overview

Umbilical cord-derived allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the University of Gaziantep for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This therapy utilizes mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the umbilical cord, which are characterized by their low immunogenicity and high proliferative capacity. The cells are administered intravenously to both ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients. The therapeutic rationale is based on the ability of MSCs to home to sites of muscle injury and exert anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, potentially reducing the chronic inflammation and fibrosis that drive muscle degeneration in DMD. Additionally, these cells may secrete various growth factors and cytokines that support the survival and regeneration of existing muscle fibers, aiming to preserve motor function and improve the quality of life for affected individuals.
