Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell (UC-MSC) spheroids are an advanced cell therapy product developed by Acibadem University (Acibadem Labcell) for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa. The therapy utilizes the paracrine potential of mesenchymal stem cells, which are known to secrete a variety of neurotrophic factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), to support the survival and function of degenerating photoreceptors. By delivering these cells as three-dimensional spheroids into the suprachoroidal space, the treatment aims to provide a sustained release of these factors in close proximity to the retina, potentially slowing the progression of vision loss. This approach leverages the immunomodulatory and anti-apoptotic properties of MSCs to create a more favorable environment for retinal cell survival while minimizing the risks associated with subretinal or intravitreal injections.
