Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell being investigated for the treatment of diabetic erectile dysfunction. Developed and studied by Ankara City Hospital Bilkent, these cells are administered via a single intracavernosal injection into the corpus cavernosum. The therapeutic mechanism involves the secretion of paracrine factors that promote tissue regeneration, stimulate angiogenesis, provide neuroprotection, and exert anti-fibrotic effects within the penile tissue. This regenerative approach is specifically targeted at patients with a history of diabetes mellitus who have demonstrated an insufficient response to standard medical therapies, such as phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, aiming to restore penile hemodynamics and erectile function.
