Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by Alliancells Bioscience are an allogeneic cell therapy being investigated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These multipotent stem cells possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Upon administration, UC-MSCs migrate to sites of inflammation where they suppress the overactive immune response characteristic of RA by inhibiting the proliferation of pro-inflammatory T cells (Th1 and Th17) and promoting the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs). They also modulate the activity of B cells, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells through the secretion of soluble factors such as indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). This therapy aims to restore immune homeostasis and reduce joint damage in patients, particularly those who are refractory to conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
