Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from umbilical cord tissue, such as Wharton's jelly. These cells are characterized by their high proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. In the treatment of chronic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease, UC-MSCs are administered via intra-articular injection to promote the repair of damaged articular cartilage and bone while modulating the local inflammatory environment. Erciyes University is currently evaluating the safety and efficacy of these cells in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT04730323), comparing their therapeutic potential against adipose tissue-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) in patients with chronic TMJ disorders.
