Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being investigated by Fujian Medical University for the prevention and treatment of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in patients following surgical repair of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). These cells possess potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, acting primarily through the secretion of paracrine factors (the secretome) such as cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors. By modulating the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) often triggered by major cardiovascular surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass, UC-MSCs aim to reduce tissue damage and promote regenerative repair across multiple organ systems, including the lungs, kidneys, and liver.
