Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are a cell-based biologic therapy being developed by the General Hospital of Shenyang Military Region for the treatment of ischemic stroke. These multipotent stem cells are harvested from the umbilical cord and administered intravenously. The therapeutic mechanism is believed to involve a combination of immunomodulation, neuroprotection, and the promotion of neurogenesis and angiogenesis, largely mediated by the secretion of various neurotrophic factors. Clinical evaluation has focused on safety and efficacy in patients within six months of stroke onset, as well as potential applications in end-stage liver disease.
