Overview

This is an investigational cell therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord Wharton's jelly. It is being developed by the Jinnah Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre in Lahore, Pakistan, for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The therapy aims to leverage the paracrine and immunomodulatory properties of MSCs to preserve photoreceptor function and slow retinal degeneration. By releasing growth factors similar to those produced by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), these cells may provide neuroprotection to rods and cones. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04763369) comparing sub-tenon and suprachoroidal administration routes.
