Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) developed by Jinnah Hospital represent an investigational cell-based biologic therapy for the treatment of moderate to severe COVID-19. These cells are isolated from human umbilical cord tissue collected from healthy pregnancies and expanded for therapeutic use. The primary mechanism of action involves potent immunomodulatory effects and paracrine signaling, which aim to suppress the hyperinflammatory "cytokine storm" and systemic inflammation associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. By modulating the host immune response and promoting tissue regeneration, UCMSCs are intended to prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and multi-organ failure. The safety and efficacy of this therapy are being evaluated through intravenous infusions in clinical trials led by a consortium at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.
