This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from umbilical cord tissue, developed by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The therapy involves a single intravenous infusion of MSCs obtained from healthy donors and processed at MUSC's GMP-compliant Clean Cell Facility. It functions through immunomodulatory mechanisms, specifically by promoting the proliferation of Th2 and regulatory T cells while inhibiting the activity of Th1, Th17, and B cells. Following a successful Phase I safety trial which showed clinically meaningful decreases in SLEDAI scores, the therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase II multicenter trial funded by the Lupus Foundation of America.
