Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed at Rumah Sakit Pusat Angkatan Darat (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto are a cell-based therapy being evaluated for the treatment of keloids. These multipotent cells possess significant immunomodulatory and anti-fibrotic properties, which they exert primarily through paracrine signaling. By secreting various cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles, UC-MSCs inhibit the over-proliferation of keloid fibroblasts and suppress the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix components, particularly collagen, by modulating the TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway. This therapeutic approach aims to reduce the size, height, and symptoms of keloids, offering a potential alternative or adjunct to traditional treatments like corticosteroid injections. The treatment is typically administered via intralesional injection directly into the keloid tissue.
