Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (uMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by researchers at the Second Hospital of Shandong University for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). These cells are derived from human umbilical cord or placenta and administered via intravenous infusion. The therapy functions through potent immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the inhibition of B cell differentiation and T cell activation, the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs), and the suppression of Th17 cell generation and interleukin-17 (IL-17) secretion. A Phase II clinical trial (NCT01420432) evaluated the safety and efficacy of these uMSCs at a dose of 1.0E+6 MSC/kg, often in combination with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), demonstrating a favorable safety profile and clinical improvement in disease activity and symptoms.
