Overview

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by researchers at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. These cells are isolated from human umbilical cord tissue and processed under GMP conditions at the hospital's Biotherapy Center. The therapy is primarily being investigated for the treatment of Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and liver cirrhosis. UCMSCs exert their therapeutic effects through immunomodulation, reduction of systemic inflammation, and potential paracrine signaling that promotes hepatocyte regeneration and reduces fibrosis. Clinical trials have demonstrated that weekly peripheral infusions can improve survival rates and liver function markers, such as serum albumin and total bilirubin levels, in patients with severe liver disease.
